What I Learned As A New TV News Reporter/MMJ

In October 2018, I was granted the opportunity to become a MMJ/news reporter at my current station. After working as a digital content producer for a year, this was an exciting step up and a realization that hard work truly does pay off. It’s a job I’ve dreamt of working ever since I was a child, and it was finally happening for me.

However, the new position came with new skills to learn and another level of responsibility. I went from sitting at my desk to being out in the field everyday. I grew stronger just from carrying my heavy equipment everywhere I go. I learned to toggle between being warm and descriptive to serious and concise, depending on the situation. Believe me, there’s still so much to learn, but I’m not worried at all. Every day brings another opportunity to grow.

Working as a local news reporter has been such an exciting and unique experience. I made this video to share what it was like during month two (I’m writing this post as I approach my sixth month) and some tips that have helped me get through the earliest stages. I hope this video helps someone in their own journalism journey.
